Ingrown, 1998

C-print, artist's frame

21 3/4 x 19 7/8 inches (55.25 x 49.85 cm)

Ingrown is a portrait of the artist’s hands connected by a set of red-lacquered nails that grow continuously from each finger to its counterpart on the opposite hand. Each pair of nails has been manually glued together, constructing a distorted image of the body. An outer signifier of femininity is reoriented inward as the performance of gender incapacitates the body.
